How do ambulance services work in NSW?

If you live in NSW, you have to pay for being treated by paramedics and transported by ambulance.

You can find the current fees and charges for ambulance services in NSW on NSW Ambulance’s website.

You do not have to pay for ambulance services if you hold a:

  • Health Care Card
  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card
  • Department of Veteran’s Affairs White Card.

You may also be exempt if you are:

  • a minor under a care order
  • a victim of sexual assault, domestic violence or child abuse
  • being taken involuntarily to a mental health facility
  • covered by a workers’ compensation, motor accident or third-party insurance claim
  • being treated for COVID-19 or have an adverse reaction to a COVID-19 vaccination.

Should I take out Ambulance Cover if I live in NSW?

If you live in NSW and do not fall into one of the exceptions, you may want to take out Ambulance Cover.

You can purchase Ambulance Cover from a health insurer. In many cases, it is included in Hospital Cover or Extras Cover. Check with your insurer to find out whether your policy includes ambulance services.
