In this Guide, we explain the Medicare Levy and the Medicare Levy Surcharge.

The Australian Government uses the Medicare Levy to help fund Medicare. You will have to pay the Medicare Levy on your taxable income unless you are eligible for an exemption.

If you earn over a certain amount and do not have an appropriate level of Hospital Cover, you may also have to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge. This is how the Government encourages people on higher incomes to take out private health insurance.

This Guide will help you work out:

  • how much the Medicare Levy costs you
  • whether you can claim an exemption from paying the Medicare Levy
  • whether you will have to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge.
