What are adult dependants and how do they affect my health insurance price?

Reviewed and updated 12 September 2024

Private Health Insurance prices can vary on policies that cover certain types of adult dependants. Child dependants on health insurance are those under the age of 18 that do not have a partner. Student dependants must be aged between 18 and 31, enrolled in full-time study and must not have a partner.

There are 2 types of health insurance adult dependants which may increase the price you finally pay:

  • Non-student dependants: refers to adult dependants aged between 18 and 31 who do not have a partner and are not enrolled in full-time study. Some insurers cap the upper age limit below 31 years of age, so it is important to find out your insurer’s definition of ‘non-student dependants’. Adding non-student dependants to your policy may affect your health insurance premium, so you will need to clarify this with your insurer to finalise your price.
  • Dependants with a disability: refers to dependants aged 18 or over who are participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). There is no upper age limit, and their relationship status does not affect their eligibility for cover on your policy. Adding dependants with a disability over the age of 18 to your policy may affect your health insurance premium so talk to your insurer if this applies to your situation.

Student daughter about to finish studying

Ruth and Greg have a 25-year-old daughter, Sam, who is a full-time student. She is covered by her parents’ policy. Next year, when she has finished her studies, she will no longer be eligible for cover as a student dependant, but can continue to receive cover as a non-student dependant on her parents’ policy for an additional charge.

Son with a disability

Leanne has 37-year-old twin sons, Brett and Jason. Brett is married so because of this, and his age, he is not eligible for cover on Leanne’s Single Parent health insurance policy. However Jason has a disability, which means he is eligible for cover as a dependant with a disability, which results in an increased premium on Leanne’s policy.
