Doctors’ Health Fund (Doctors’ Health) is a private health insurer that operates as a restricted health fund.
Doctors’ Health was established by the NSW branch of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) in 1977 to serve the medical community.
There used to be a convention that doctors did not charge colleagues or their colleagues’ families. When Medibank was set up in 1976, doctors began to charge their colleagues the amount of the Medibank rebate. Doctors’ Health was set up to solve the discomfort associated with doctors charging their colleagues fees.
Avant Mutual, Australia’s largest medical defence organisation, bought Doctors’ Health in 2012. It now has more than 32,000 members.

The insurer’s Top Hospital Cover is unique because it pays a gap based on the AMA’s list of medical services and fees rather than the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee.
Doctors’ Health includes Ambulance Cover with Hospital Cover and Combined Hospital and Extras Cover.
Under these policies, Ambulance Cover is not restricted to emergencies or limited to a number of services per year.
