Should I switch health insurers?

Part 2 of 3 on switching health insurers

By Trudie McConnochie

If you’re thinking about changing health insurers, we’ve got your back.

You can change your policy and insurer whenever you like, and your right to do so is protected under the Private Health Insurance Act 2007. That means you can change insurers without being penalised, although you may have to serve new waiting periods on Extras Cover.

At healthslips.com.au, we’ve made it easy to change your health insurer. Here, we explain what to consider if you’re wondering ‘should I change health insurers?’

The main reasons people consider changing health insurance are:

  • Cost – wanting a more affordable policy.
  • Value – feeling like you’re paying for something you don’t need, or that you’re not able to claim back as much as you expected.
  • Price rises – every year, health insurers put up their prices to reflect increased healthcare costs, but some policies jump up more than others. This is a big motivation for people to switch insurers.
Why do insurers raise their prices?
  • Change in your circumstances – perhaps your kids have moved out, or you’ve separated from your partner. Maybe your income or your healthcare needs have changed. These are all great reasons to review your health insurance to make sure you’ve got cover that’s right for you and your needs.

Before you switch insurers, you need to find the best deal for you (and everyone your policy covers). Healthslips.com.au is the only health insurance comparison website that compares policies across the entire market (other sites only offer you a select number of policies that they have commercial partnerships with). Our Calculator is free to use and you don’t have to enter any contact details and end up in an annoying sales funnel. Why not give it a go?

When you’ve found the policy that’s right for you, it’s easy to make the switch. Read through the steps here.
