How do ambulances services work in SA?

If you live in SA, you have to pay for being treated by paramedics and transported by ambulance.

You can find SA’s current fees and charges for ambulance services on the SA Ambulance Service website.

You do not have to pay for the service if you hold a:

  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card
  • Department of Veteran’s Affairs White Card.

You do not have to pay for the service if it is for initial attendance at a motor vehicle accident.

Should I take out Ambulance Cover if I live in SA?

If you live in SA and do not fall into one of the exceptions, you may want to take out Ambulance Cover. In many cases, it is included in Hospital Cover or Extras Cover. Check with your insurer to find out whether your policy includes ambulance services.
