What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is the study of biomechanics or how each part of the neuro-musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, nerves and other tissues) works and influences every other part.

It is similar to Chiropractic, Physiotherapy and Remedial Massage. Osteopathy is different because it draws on each to provide a holistic approach to health through manual readjustments and physical manipulation.

Osteopaths treat a range of conditions, including:

  • arthritis
  • back and neck pain
  • headaches
  • pregnancy-related discomfort
  • sciatica
  • sports injuries
  • tendonitis
  • vertigo (especially a condition known as Benign Positional Vertigo or BPV).
  • repetitive strain and overuse injuries.

Treatments include:

  • articulation (gentle rhythmic joint movements)
  • body awareness sessions
  • individual exercise routines
  • relaxation techniques
  • soft tissue massage
  • stretching of muscles and joints
  • spinal manipulation
  • visceral manipulation (gentle movement of the abdominal and pelvic areas).

Is Osteopathy a regulated profession in Australia?

Yes. In Australia, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) and the Osteopathy Board of Australia regulate Osteopaths.

Does private health insurance cover Osteopathy?

If private health insurance covers Osteopathy, it falls under Extras Cover.

Ask your insurer whether it covers Osteopathy.

If so, check whether Osteopathy is subject to:

  • a waiting period before you can make a claim
  • per claim limits
  • annual limits.

If I have Extras Cover that includes Osteopathy, will I be covered if I see any Osteopath?

No. To be covered, your Osteopath must be a member of an Australian peak body or professional organisation. They must also have approval to be registered under the state and territory laws where they operate.

In addition, your health insurer can decide whether or not to cover treatments from a particular provider.

Some insurers may require you to see an Osteopath who is one of their recognised providers only.

Before seeking treatment, always check with your health insurer that you are covered.

Does Medicare cover Osteopathy?

Yes. Medicare covers Osteopathy treatments but only in certain situations, including:

You:

  • have a chronic condition and complex care needs, or
  • live in an aged care facility, or
  • are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent

and:

  • your GP recommends Osteopathy services
  • the consultation lasts at least 20 minutes
  • you receive no more than 5 services in a calendar year.
