How to claim a Medicare Benefit

There are 4 ways to claim a Medicare Benefit:

  1. at your provider’s office 
  2. through your Medicare online account
  3. at a Medicare Service Centre
  4. by post.

Medicare will not accept claims for services that are more than 2 years old.


How to claim your Medicare Benefit at your provider’s office

The quickest and easiest way to claim your Medicare Benefit is when you pay for the service at your doctor or healthcare provider’s office.

To claim your benefit, you need to:

The provider’s office lodges an electronic claim for you and Medicare pays the Medicare Benefit into:

  • the account for the EFTPOS card you used to pay or
  • the bank account you have registered with Medicare.

Your benefit is paid into your nominated bank account and is usually available on the next working day.


How to claim your Medicare Benefit online

There are 2 ways to claim your Medicare Benefit online. You can use:

  1. Your Medicare Online Account through myGov or
  2. The Express Plus Medicare mobile app.

Step 2:

Submit your claim.

Step 3:

Medicare usually pays your benefit within 7 days into your nominated bank account.

How to claim using the Express Plus Medicare app

Step 2:

Download the Express Plus Medicare mobile app and set up your account details.

Step 3:

Submit your claim showing:

  • Your account and receipt
  • Details of the service you are claiming.

Step 4:

Confirm or provide your bank account details.

Step 5:

Medicare pays your benefit into your nominated bank account usually within 7 days.

You can claim your Medicare Benefit at a Medicare Service Centre.

You need to provide your bank account details.

Medicare usually pays your benefit within 21 days.


How to claim your Medicare benefit by post

If you cannot claim your Medicare Benefit at your doctor’s office, online or at a Medicare Service Centre, you can claim it by post.
