Who is eligible for Medicare in Australia?

You are eligible for Medicare in Australia and receive a Medicare Card if you live in Australia and you are:

  • an Australian citizen
  • a New Zealand citizen who is living in Australia
  • an Australian permanent resident
  • applying for permanent residency
  • a temporary resident covered by a ministerial order.

Australia has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with a number of countries. This means you may also be able to register for Medicare if you are visiting from:

  • Belgium
  • Finland
  • Italy
  • Malta
  • The Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Slovenia
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom.
