What is informed financial consent?

Reviewed and updated 3 April 2024

Even if you have private health insurance, you will probably have to pay part of the cost of your treatment.

Informed financial consent is a process that involves your doctor, healthcare provider, health insurer and hospital so you understand how much you have to pay out of your own pocket before your treatment.

Before you are treated, you are entitled to ask the following people and organisations about any extra money you must pay out of your own pocket:

  • your doctor
  • your healthcare provider
  • your health insurer
  • the hospital.

Follow these steps to find out whether you have to pay any out-of-pocket costs:

Step 1:

Ask each of your doctors or healthcare providers to set out their fee in writing and if you need to pay a Medical Gap.

Step 2:

Ask your health insurer whether your policy covers the procedure and whether you have to pay:

  • an excess
  • a co-payment
  • any other charge.

Step 3:

Ask your hospital whether it has an agreement with your health insurer and whether you have to pay a Hospital Gap or any extra costs. Ask for this information in writing.
