How do ambulances services work in VIC?

If you live in VIC, you have to pay for being treated by paramedics and transported by ambulance.

You can find the current fees and charges for ambulance services in Victoria on Ambulance Victoria’s website.

You do not have to pay for ambulance services if you hold:

  • a Health Care Card
  • a Pensioner Concession Card
  • a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold 
  • a Department of Veterans’ Affairs White Card.

You may not have to pay for ambulance services if you are:

  • injured in a motor vehicle accident.
  • injured at work
  • a child under a care order
  • a compulsory mental health patient
  • an asylum seeker.

Should I take out Ambulance Cover if I live in VIC?

If you live in VIC and do not fall into one of the exceptions, you may want to take out Ambulance Cover. 

You can purchase Ambulance Cover from a health insurer. In many cases, it is included in Hospital Cover or Extras Cover. Check with your insurer to find out whether your Hospital Cover policy includes ambulance services.

Alternatively, you can purchase a membership with Ambulance Victoria. If you hold Hospital Cover, you should check with your insurer whether they reimburse you for your subscription.
