Cancelling your private health insurance so you can switch to another insurer

There are 6 steps to cancel your health insurance and switch to another insurer.

Step 1:

Call your current insurer and request a clearance certificate, which provides a record of your health insurance cover. 

You need a clearance certificate to avoid completing another waiting period.

Step 2:

Contact your new insurer, supply your clearance certificate and set a date for your new insurance to start.

Step 3:

Contact your old insurer to cancel your health insurance.

Step 4:

Depending on your insurer, you have to fill in an online form or log into an online portal.

Some insurers let you cancel over the phone.

Step 5:

Ask your new health insurer to start your cover.

Step 6:

Cancel your direct debit with your old health insurer and your bank.
