How does the Lifetime Health Cover Loading work if I am an Australian who has been living overseas and return to Australia permanently?

Reviewed and updated 3 April 2024

If you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident who has been living overseas on your Base Day and return to Australia permanently, the Lifetime Health Cover Loading rules are different.

There are two factors that will affect your Loading:

  1. If you were living overseas on your Base Day (1 July after your 31st birthday) and you return to Australia permanently (for more than 90 days), your Base Day becomes one year after the day you returned to Australia.
  2. If you were over 31 and overseas on 1 July 2000, you are considered to have held Hospital Cover on your Base Day because that is the date when the Australian Government introduced the Lifetime Health Cover Loading.

Once you have calculated your Base Day, you can calculate your Lifetime Health Cover Loading by using our healthslips.com.au Calculator.
