Do I have to pay the Lifetime Health Cover Loading if I am an Australian who lives overseas and return to Australia temporarily?

Reviewed and updated 10 October 2024

If you are an Australian who lives overseas and returns to Australia temporarily, your Lifetime Health Cover Loading will depend on your particular situation.

There are 3 factors that could affect your Loading:

  1. You can go without Hospital Cover for 1,094 days after your Base Day without having to pay the Lifetime Health Cover Loading, as long as you had Hospital Cover when initially in Australia from your Base Day.
  2. You can visit Australia for up to 90 days and still be considered to be overseas.
  3. When you visit Australia for more than 90 days, you have 1,094 ‘Days of Absence’ to take out Hospital Cover without paying the Lifetime Health Cover Loading, as long as you had Hospital Cover when initially in Australia from your Base Day.
